Berge Ayvazian

Conference Chairman, 4G World Conference

Berge Ayvazian has joined Heavy Reading as a Senior Consultant, following more than 20 years as a senior telecom industry analyst and strategy consultant with Yankee Group. Ayvazian is conducting research and consulting projects on the convergence of broadband and mobility and the business strategies of mobile broadband technology and service providers. Ayvazian served as Yankee Group’s CEO from 1999 through 2001, and later served as strategy director for the Reuters Research and Advisory Unit. He is now leading a new integrated research and consulting practice on 4G Network and Mobile Internet Evolution. This practice will help operators to develop their 4G technology roadmaps – building on existing Heavy Reading research in packet core, service platforms, and mobile backhaul – and build a complete mobile Internet business case leveraging Pyramid’s regional demand-side research on 4G and mobile Internet service adoption. Ayvazian is a frequent speaker at telecom industry events and was contributing editor of 4G Trends and co-chairman of the 4G World, WiMAX World, and Mobile Internet World conference programs.

Fred Campbell has been President and CEO of the Wireless Communications Association International since August 2008. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska College of Law where he teaches spectrum law and policy.

Campbell previously served as Wireless Bureau Chief at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 2006-2008. Prior to heading the Wireless Bureau, he spent two years as Wireless Legal Advisor to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin.

Gabriel has been analyzing the telecoms and technology sectors for over 20 years and was previously European content director at VNU Business Publishing, one of the world’s largest technology publishers.

As the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for GENBAND, Kemmerer is responsible for setting the strategic technical direction for the company. Prior to GENBAND, Kemmerer held a broad range of positions at Lucent and then Alcatel-Lucent.  Kemmerer is also a member of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) Board of Directors, and serves on ATIS’ Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council, which actively addresses the industry’s technical, operational and business priorities.

Mark Lowenstein

Managing Director, Mobile Ecosystem

Mark Lowenstein is a leading wireless industry executive, advisor, and commentator. Most recently, Lowenstein was a member of the senior leadership team at Verizon Wireless, where as Vice President of Strategy he led the company’s efforts in product and business planning, market segmentation, national pricing, and customer intelligence for both consumer and enterprise markets.

Prior to his role at Verizon Wireless, Lowenstein was Managing Director of consulting firm, Mobile Ecosystem, where he advised companies and C-level executives across the landscape of wireless communications on market, product, and industry strategy. Prior to founding Mobile Ecosystem, Lowenstein spent ten years at the Yankee Group, where he founded and led the company’s wireless practices on a global basis. He also managed Yankee Group’s overall research activities in Canada, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. Lowenstein also spent a year as VP, Strategy at Informio, a wireless software and applications firm that raised $40 million from leading VCs.

During the course of his fifteen-year career as an industry consultant, Lowenstein has advised nearly all of the major players across the mobile value chain, as well as top advertising agencies, media/entertainment firms, and industry associations. Lowenstein has also had advisory roles with several leading venture capital and private equity firms. He has been on the advisory boards of Telephia, SeaPoint Ventures, Visage Mobile, East Peak Advisors, and Froghop. In 2006, Lowenstein was selected by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to be part of an executive team to determine wireless strategy for the City of Boston. Lowenstein also founded the Boston Wireless Braintrust, a group of twenty CEOs and wireless industry thought leaders who meet quarterly, on a proprietary basis, to discuss key industry issues, opportunities and challenges.

As one of the wireless industry’s thought leaders, Lowenstein is a sought-after speaker, delivering keynote addresses at major industry and private corporate events. He has also published extensively. His Lens on Wireless newsletter is read by more than 12,000 industry executives; he authored a monthly opinion column in Wireless Week for five years; and he has written columns for leading trade and business media.

Lowenstein has appeared as an expert witness on the wireless industry in several proceedings, and has been engaged in several prominent cases with the FCC. Lowenstein has also been an adjunct faculty member at Tufts University, where he taught a course on the “Business of Wireless Communications”.

Monica Paolini is the founder and president of Senza Fili Consulting, a company that provides advisory support on wireless data technologies and services. At Senza Fili, she assists vendors in gaining a better understanding of the service provider and end user markets. She works alongside service providers in developing wireless data strategies, and in assessing the demand for wireless services. Independent advice, a strong quantitative approach, and an international perspective are the hallmarks of her work.

She has a PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego, an MBA from the University of Oxford, and a BA/MA in Philosophy from the University of Bologna (Italy).

Chris Pearson

Chris Pearson is the President of 4G Americas.  In his role as the spokesperson and senior operating officer of the corporation, he is responsible for the strategic planning of the organization and providing executive management for the integration of strategy and operations in the areas of technology, marketing and public relations as well as public and regulatory affairs.  As President of 4G Americas (formerly called 3G Americas), Mr. Pearson represents 4G Americas’ Market Representation interests within the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) organization. 

Mr. Pearson lead the organization from its inception as the GSM family of technologies market share grew from 10% to over 75% in North, Central and South America. Mr. Pearson came to 3G Americas from the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC) where he served as Executive Vice President in charge of the strategic management of the technology consortium.  Prior to joining the UWCC, Mr. Pearson held several senior technical and marketing positions at AT&T Wireless and GTE.

Mr. Pearson has more than 23 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, and has spoken at technology conferences throughout the world including Mobile World Congress, CTIA and 4G World.

Mr. Pearson earned a Master of Business Administration degree from The Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University and a Bachelor of Arts degree with emphasis in Marketing and Finance from the University of Washington.

Rob Rich

Managing Director, TM Forum Insights, Rich Media & Communications Consulting

Robert J. (Rob) Rich is Managing Director of the TM Forum’s Transformation Research Center, and TM Forum Insights Group, the Forum’s market research arm. In this position, he is responsible for all facets of the TRC and Insights, and is a regular contributor to the Research portfolio.

Rob Rich has more than 15 years experience in market research and consulting, including 2 years as an independent consultant, 11 years as Executive Vice President of Communications & Networking Research & Consulting for the Yankee Group, and 2 years as Director of Communications Equipment and Services at Dataquest, a research firm subsequently acquired by Gartner Group. In each role, he was responsible for research and consulting on both fixed and wireless network services, equipment, and software for service providers, technology suppliers, and investors. He has also managed research groups covering enterprise networking and enterprise IT applications.

Prior to joining Dataquest, Rob Rich spent 17 years in the computer/networking industry, where he held management positions in communications, professional services, software engineering and information technology strategy. He also served as CIO for a mid-sized retail firm, and divisional systems and programming director for a very large financial services firm.

Rob Rich has extensive knowledge of various aspects of telecommunications. He is a former member of the Advisory Board for the TM Forum, a contributor to industry publications, a frequent speaker at industry conferences, and has served as an expert witness in industry litigation. Rob Rich holds a B.A. in mathematics, and has completed executive programs at the Sloan School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

Professor Simon Saunders

Chairman, Small Cell Forum

Simon Saunders was appointed Chair of the Femto Forum in July 2007 and remains Chair of the Small Cell Forum today.

Simon has specialised in wireless communications throughout his career – in both industry and academia. He is currently an independent consultant, working for regulators and technology firms and a visiting professor at the University of Surrey. Simon has acted as a consultant to a wide range of companies, including BAA, BBC, Mitsubishi, British Land, O2, Ofcom, BT, ntl and many others. He has invented more than fifteen patented technologies and has written more than 130 publications in learned journals, international conferences and book chapters.

For several years he worked in an advanced development role for Philips Telecom, including the standardisation of the TETRA air interface for digital Private Mobile Radio. He led a team designing technology for a novel two-way paging system. Simon also spent one year working with the Ascom in Switzerland, defining product technologies and system design solutions for the first generation of TETRA handsets and base stations.

In 1995 Simon worked for Motorola in their GSM Research Group, designing air interface and system planning enhancements leading to increased capacity second generation GSM systems. This included several patented advances in antenna, modem and cellular architectures. Simon lectured on mobile systems and led a research team within the Centre for Communication Systems Research at The University of Surrey for seven years.

As Chief Technology Officer and then Chief Executive Officer of Cellular Design Services Ltd., Simon developed a suite of software tools and services for auditing and planning a wide variety of in-building radio systems.

Daryl Schoolar

Principal Analyst, Wireless Infrastructure, Ovum

Daryl covers the wireless infrastructure space at Ovum, with a primary focus on market activities as they apply to the Radio Access Network (RAN). RAN coverage includes macro, micro, and pico cell solutions for CDMA EVDO, HSPA/HSPA+, LTE (TDD and FDD), LTE-Advanced, and WiMAX.  Daryl’s research includes not only what infrastructure vendors are developing in those areas, but how mobile operators are deploying and using those wireless networking solutions.

During his career as an industry analyst Daryl has been involved in such projects as helping technology vendors develop use cases for new products and services, identifying new technology trends, and providing market sizing and market share support.  He regularly speaks at industry and vendor events, where he is called upon to provide his insights on various trends impacting the wireless infrastructure market.  He is also often asked for his comments by trade publications on such issues as merger and acquisitions, new product announcements, and market developments as it relates to his coverage area.

Daryl brings over 11 years of industry analyst experience to Ovum.  Prior to Ovum he held similar positions with Current Analysis and In-Stat.  Before becoming an industry analyst, Daryl worked at telecommunications service provider Cable & Wireless USA, where he worked on that operator’s market and competitive intelligence team. 
Daryl Schoolar has a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Management from Virginia Tech.
