4G WORLD 2012 – Examining the Technologies that Define 4G
By: Kate Mitchell, Senior Director of Marketing, 4G World

4G World 2012′s program is available on-line and is being updated regularly! 4G World 2012′s comprehensive and always-expanding program explores all critical aspects of the business and technology of mobile broadband.

What constitutes 4G? What technologies or standards should qualify as true 4G technologies? What defines a true 4G experience?

The ITU definition of IMT-Advanced is a generally accepted technical baseline for 4G. That definition is also broad enough to encompass the standards of LTE-Advanced, HSPA+ Advanced and WiMAX2. 4G World’s program thoughtfully examines the roadmap for operators of LTE, HSPA+ and WiMAX networks that will guide them to IMT-Advanced networks and opportunities to profit from them.

Coming to a fork in the road – will all paths lead to IMT-Advanced?
By: Andy Mitchell, Editor, 4G Trends

“What is 4G wireless?” Ask this question of any five people you know in the mobile broadband industry. It’s highly probable that you’ll receive five very different answers. In fact, ask ten or even twenty people and the outcome is likely to be the same.

The number of definitions of 4G wireless that exist today seems only to be limited by the number of opinions one seeks. Definitions might just include technologies such as HSPA, HSPA+, LTE, LTE Advanced and WiMAX. And in some cases the definition may even reference IMT-Advanced.

“As the most advanced technologies currently defined for global wireless mobile broadband communications, IMT-Advanced is considered as ‘4G,’ although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these technologies, LTE and WiMAX, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed,” espoused the ITU in a PR released in December of 2010. Small Cells Throw Up Big Challenges for Operators
By: Michelle Donegan, European Editor, Light Reading Mobile

While wireless equipment suppliers have developed a new generation of small cells designed for public access in mobile data networks, operators have to overcome some deployment challenges that these diminutive base stations create, according to a Heavy Reading analyst.

As Light Reading Mobile’s recent report, there is a diverse range of public access small cell products designed for use in various places, including indoor venues, outdoor urban hot spots, or rural areas.

But product availability is one thing, deploying it is another matter. Read The Full Article »

Why Security Isn’t A BYOD Showstopper
By: Craig Mathias, InformationWeek

IT should view the bring-your-own-device phenomenon as less of a threat and more as an opportunity. Here’s why.

In a webinar on BYOD that I just did, a survey of the 500-plus participants showed that security is the way-out-in-front, lead concern of IT managers when it comes to implementing a bring-your-own-device program. More than 60% of those people voting reiterated what I hear every day. “Is it safe? Can we really trust users and their personal handsets with enterprise secrets?”

Security is, of course, the one part of IT where one can never be “done”. Each week brings new concerns, new threats, and some previously unknown and unforeseeable challenge. Perhaps it’s news of yet another IT breach, or, even worse, a discovery, not yet public, that something has gone terribly wrong and confidential information might be compromised. With security constantly under fire, then, aren’t we just making things worse by allowing essentially any device on the corporate network? Aren’t we just waving the proverbial red flag in front of the hacker community, daring them to do their worst once again? Read The Full Article »

National Broadband Policy – Is the Crunch Really On?
By: Andy Mitchell, Editor, 4G Trends

If you subscribe to the data and timing presented in the National Broadband Policy (NBP) – Connecting America, the US will likely begin to witness the effects of a spectrum crunch as early as next year. The US wireless carriers continue to argue that ever increasing smartphone traffic is threatening to overwhelm their networks, and are asking the government for help. But if or when it will actually happen is the subject of much speculation and some experts maintain that technology already has the answers.

“Arguing that the nation could run out of spectrum is like saying it was going to run out of a color,” quipped Dr. David Reed, now Senior Vice President, Chief Scientist Group, SAP Labs. As far back as a decade ago, Reed, who was at that time a professor at MIT, has challenged notions of spectrum scarcity, asserting that regulatory allocation of spectrum “is a legal metaphor that does not correspond to physical reality.” Read The Full Article »

RIM Empire Didn’t Strike Back At BlackBerry World
By: Eric Zeman, InformationWeek

Research In Motion has a plan to turn itself around, but it is quickly running out of time. Its next-gen platform may be on track to arrive later this year, but the mobile industry’s blistering pace of innovation won’t slow down to wait for RIM to catch up.

RIM provided a first look at BlackBerry 10 during BlackBerry World 2012′s opening keynote. RIM has pinned its future on BB10. This platform combines the best of BlackBerry 7 and PlayBook OS 2.0 and will serve as RIM’s mobile computing platform in the years to come.

The problem is that RIM barely showed anything about the new OS. It revealed a great software keyboard, a high-level view of the cascading user interface, and a very brief look at the contact and messaging component of the UI. That’s it. The message from RIM on BB10 is clear: It’s not nearly ready. The company showed so little of the new platform, it’s hard to believe there’s really a platform at all. The presentations were slick, but RIM didn’t show even an early build of BB10 working on a prototype handset. For all intents and purposes, we don’t know anything about BB10. Read The Full Article »

Experiencing a Technology Leap Year
By: Jim Hodges, Senior Analyst, Heavy Reading

It wasn’t until I was walking out of the venerable FIRA convention center at Mobile World Congress for the last time late on Feb. 29 that I realized it was a leap day.

And overall, this seemed fitting, because an informal message I took from the event is that 2012 meets many of the criteria to be what I consider a technology “leap year.” Although much more difficult to define, and lacking the cadence of a calendar leap year, the impact of a technology leap year can be much more profound than simply having one additional day to analyze telecom trends.

Essentially, I define a technology leap year as one in which critical technologies take the leap from development to commercialization and monetization phases. The upside is more innovative services and applications for end users; the downside for some vendors and carriers is that it accelerates the rate of legacy service erosion. Read The Full Article »

Small cells and Wi-Fi offload: a complementary approach to increase in capacity density
By: Monica Paolini, Senza Fili Consulting

We all love a fight, and for a long time small cells and Wi-Fi offload have been presented as competing approaches, mostly with Wi-Fi as the initial, cheap-and-cheerful solution that would eventually be replaced by carrier-grade small cell deployments in high-density areas.

This is not what is happening. The pressure on mobile operators to increase capacity — and especially capacity density (i.e., mbps per square mile) — is so strong that they cannot pick between small cells and Wi-Fi, but they equally need both. And this is because operators increasingly realize that the two technologies not only offer an incremental increase in capacity, but they can play a different, complementary role.

Although operators have been offering Wi-Fi offload for some time now, their approach is slowly evolving, towards a more extensive use of Wi-Fi, a tighter integration with their cellular networks, and a better management of Wi-Fi connectivity. While Wi-Fi access in public hotspots grabs most headlines, operators have come to value Wi-Fi most for offloading traffic from home. Across the world, the peak in data traffic is at around 9:00pm and a good portion of this comes from home usage. As most subscribers have a broadband connection and Wi-Fi in their homes, offloading this traffic is easy, effective, and low-cost to implement. (On the other hand, a widespread increase in capacity in residential areas would be very expensive.) As Wi-Fi offload captures an increasing portion of data traffic, operators have become more interested in integrating it within their networks, to retain visibility into their subscriber experience and to manage the traffic as required. In this perspective, the Wi-Fi Alliance PassPoint program, Hotspot 2.0, and SIM-based authentication are likely to provide a better Wi-Fi offload experience. Similarly, the acquisition of Belair by Ericsson — a vendor that for a long time has kept its distance from Wi-Fi — demonstrates that Wi-Fi has now come of age and become an integral component of new mobile broadband networks. Facebook Phone: 4 Reasons Why It’s Crazy
By: Eric Zeman, InformationWeek

Reports of the fabled “Facebook Phone” have resurfaced, this time linking HTC to the social network. Here’s why you shouldn’t believe them.

HTC has decided to strengthen its relationship with Facebook, rather than Google, and will forge ahead with a dedicated Facebook phone, reports DigiTimes. Citing sources familiar with HTC’s plans, DigiTimes believes the company will bring a Facebook-branded smartphone to market during the third quarter.

The reasoning behind the decision, said DigiTimes, is because HTC feels burned by Google’s tighter relationship with competitor Samsung. HTC built the first Nexus phone for Google (Nexus One), but Google has picked Samsung over HTC for the last two Nexus smartphones (Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus). Worse, supply chain sources suggest that Samsung has already been chosen by Google to make the fourth Nexus device. This has left HTC feeling like it needs a new partner in the smartphone space to help set it apart. Read The Full Article »

Mobile Cloud Will Change Your Life
By: Victor Schnee, President of BSG Advisory LLC

What a difference a year makes. A year ago many critics were still talking about the “cloud” as if it were a massive amount of hype.

That has changed completely — no one dismisses the cloud any more.

At the same time, what has dawned on the information industry — IT and telecom — is the realization that the cloud is really going to be accessed overwhelmingly from mobile devices. Yes, that means what is really critical is the mobile cloud.

The new Heavy Reading study, “The Mobile Cloud: Ready or Not, Here It Comes,” provides a strategic overview of why and how the mobile cloud is going to develop at an ever-accelerating rate, and the implications that development will have on the telecom and IT industries.

Make no mistake — those implications are enormous. The mobile cloud is going to be the battleground on which the interests of a stunning list of powerful companies and industry segments come crashing together. These include not only the giant carriers (Verizon, AT&T) and mobile device makers (Apple, Samsung), but also a full contingent of Internet-based companies and software giants (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook and more). Readying Voice over 4G
By: Andy Mitchell, 4G Trends Editor

In an industry that thrives on marketing claims, there’s a lot more at stake for carriers who are preparing to deliver 4G voice than simply being the able to announce that they’re the first to market.

Sprint is planning to launch LTE in Atlanta, Baltimore, Kansas City, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, Texas by mid-year through its Network Vision program. Sprint has confirmed that around 15 LTE devices, including handsets, tablets and data cards, are on track to be launched in 2012. Among the first LTE smartphones offered by Sprint will be the LG Viper and the LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy Nexus which will make its debut by the end of April. Sprint has said that all of its LTE smartphones will have access to unlimited data plans.

Earlier this month Sprint announced that it would be rolling out “HD Voice” or high-definition voice with another new LTE handset, the HTC Evo LTE. The carrier stated that it would begin to deploy HD voice in H2 of 2012 with full support coming in Q1 of 2013. HD voice service will be based on EVRC-NW (Enhanced Variable Rate Narrowband Wideband Codec) rather than VoLTE.

For Sprint, employing HD Voice should deliver two discernable benefits. The first benefit will be for Sprint’s customers, who should experience an improvement in voice quality. For customers to experience the full effect of HD Voice however, both users on the call will need to be using an HD Voice capable handset. The HTC Evo LTE, while HD Voice won’t be operational on Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network.

The second benefit will be for Sprint, who should see an improvement in spectrum efficiencies as EVRC-NW solutions consume less bandwidth overall. The capability will be supported over Sprint’s 3G and 4G networks when the carrier completes its Network Vision upgrades in 2013. Sprint is using Qualcomm’s 1X Advanced, an evolution of CDMA2000 that with new devices and through upgrades to channel cards, has the potential of a increasing capacity by up to four times over CDMA2000 1X networks.

MetroPCS has been ahead of the curve in launching commercial LTE services — beating Verizon Wireless to launch by several months, and quickly expanded its LTE coverage to its entire 14-market footprint. MetroPCS almost immediately began transitioning its SMS and MMS traffic from its CDMA networks to its all-IP LTE platform. MetroPCS has been moving ahead strategically with VoLTE in an effort to free up spectrum as well. Because MetroPCS doesn’t have access to as much spectrum as its larger competitors, it is critical to use limited spectrum efficiently. In this case, by moving as much of its existing voice, SMS and MMS traffic to LTE, the carrier will be able to re-farm spectrum currently used for CDMA to LTE. Read The Full Article »

Wi-Fi ‘Wild West’ Challenges Carriers
By: Michelle Donegan, European Editor, Light Reading Mobile

For mobile operators, which are used to a much more controlled network environment, Wi-Fi looks like the “Wild West,” explained Brown (who clearly has been watching too many Westerns lately.) The Wi-Fi sector is so broad that it’s difficult to see which segment is best for them to target, he said.

From a mobile carrier’s point of view, Wi-Fi is “unlicensed, often unsecure, and in short dangerous,” he said, and they just “don’t know where they stand.”

While it may be fragmented and unruly, Wi-Fi has been essential to the growth in smartphone usage and has become a pillar of the mobile Internet. For example, about 60 percent to 70 percent of smartphone usage will be over Wi-Fi today, most of which is at home, according to Brown. Read The Full Article »

Mobile Health Presents Life-Changing Opportunities
By: Eric Openshaw and Phil Asmundson, Deloitte, LLP

Almost every day we find more ways to use smartphones to stay in touch, find places, play games, and compare and pay for products. Yet within three to five years, other phone uses will be more life changing for many of us. Our health may literally be in our hands. Plus, more CIOs will become involved in what appears to be the next great mobile revenue growth opportunity: mobile health.

Those are some of the findings from our recent Open Mobile survey of 250 senior mobile technology executives. Several factors make this conclusion obvious. Mobile technology lets patients and wellness-minded individuals stay in closer, better, and less-expensive contact with the right medical professionals or with remote monitoring systems. From medication reminders to wearable body sensors that let caregivers provide more rapid, accurate diagnoses and responses, mobile health solutions will become a more vital part of our lives and the service of many organizations. Adoption of mobile health technologies may match the impact of electronic health record (EHR) adoption, and it may happen faster, especially if there’s proactive collaboration among healthcare, telecom, and application providers. Is 4G Creating the New Face of Social Networking?

By: Andy Mitchell, 4G Trends Editor

Barely two years old, Instagram — an iPhone photo sharing app and service — has emerged as the “billion dollar baby” of social networking. It began as a simple application, developed by Stanford University grads Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, which added a vintage Polaroid look to photos taken with an iPhone camera. Last week Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock.

As an application Instagram has a certain “cool factor” about it; the effects can make even blasé pictures look like creative genius. But is it so much the “cool factor” that warrants a billion-dollar buy-out, or is it the fact that it has a rapidly growing user following, currently pegged at over 27 million? For Facebook, the allure of Instagram is most certainly associated with its growth and the focus of its users.

Arguably one of Facebook’s most critical and attractive features has been its ability to organize and share photos. In Facebook’s early days patient users were content to upload photos from digital cameras or scanned images. In today’s highly mobile society users aren’t quite as patient or content when it comes to sharing the images of their lives and it’s applications like Instagram and devices like iPhone that are driving a new set of expectations.

From Facebook’s point of view, anything that causes its users to spend more time connected with the application and ultimately with its advertisers, is a good thing. What Instagram can for Facebook is to improve its currently feeble photo share capabilities, quickly. The power and that speed with which Instagram can change those capabilities and address user expectations are also due in large part to advancements in mobile devices and networks and not just the application.

Apple recognized the power of the camera early on. It eventually equipped the iPhone and iPad with two of them, and of an increasing quality that is quickly rivaling what is available in single purpose digital still and video cameras. It has also witnessed the increasing value that users place on being able to edit and organize, with iPhoto, and to store and share, initially with iCloud and now with MobileMe.

“There is no doubt that the smartphone is becoming ‘good enough’ much of the time; but thanks to mobile phones, more pictures are being taken than ever before,” explained Liz Cutting, executive director and senior imaging analyst at NPD. NPD’s December 2011 Imaging Confluence Study reflected that the percent of photos taken with a smartphone grew from 17 to 27 percent over the course of a year. And that trend is a good sign for the 4G mobile ecosystem as well.

RIM Blackberry OS, Anyone? Tech Vendors Won’t Bite

By: Eric Zeman, InformationWeek

Research In Motion needs to explore strategic options, one of which could be licensing out BlackBerry OS 10.

This won’t save the company. Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins, in the job only three months, seems to be doing everything he can to turn the ailing smartphone maker around. He’s promised significant changes, new leadership, and a plan to make it all come together. That means RIM is considering multiple options. One of them, according to sources cited by Bloomberg, is licensing out its BlackBerry operating system.

BYOD – Renovating the Mobile Office

By: Andy Mitchell, 4G Trends Editor

The arrival of 4G and a myriad new smartphone and tablets is resulting in mobile office ‘makeover’. The early days of mobile office were simpler, at least for IT departments. Mobile users were all issued the same device, likely it was a BlackBerry. It was managed by a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and the liability for security and usage resided corporately.

Today’s mobile enterprise users are demanding more. With the increasing consumerization of enterprise mobility, new devices and applications are becoming an integral part of their everyday personal lives. Users now want these same devices to provide them with access to their enterprise needs. They don’t want to carry two devices and they want the freedom to choose their own device.

With iPhones and 4G Android devices becoming the consumer’s smartphone of choice, enterprise IT departments need to reassess their mobile user environments. Now add to the mix iPads and other connected 4G tablets and the problem challenge becomes even greater. BYOD or ‘bring your own device’ users want access to enterprise email, application and corporate data and for IT departments this creates a security risk and a management nightmare.

HTC EVO 4G LTE: Sprint Bets Future On it

By: Eric Zeman, InformationWeek

Sprint badly needs to accomplish two goals: sign up new customers, and keep the customers it already has. The first part of Sprint’s one-two punch strategy to accomplish these goals went into effect in October, when it began offering Apple’s iPhone for the first time. On Wednesday, Sprint wound up the second punch, which it will deliver by the end of June: the HTC EVO 4G LTE smartphone.

The EVO 4G LTE will be one of the first devices offered by Sprint that’s capable of accessing its forthcoming LTE network. Sprint has promised it will launch LTE in six markets by mid-year, and the EVO 4G LTE’s availability will likely coincide with the network’s arrival. Read The Full Article »

4G Goes Live in India

By: Michelle Donegan, European Editor, Light Reading Mobile

Mobile operators hoping that an investment in Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks might help them boost their top and bottom lines might need to think again unless they also invest in Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT) systems that will help minimize their revenue leakage (not a term to use just before lunch…). (See The SPIT Manifesto 2.0.)

That’s the overall conclusion of a number of revenue assurance and fraud management reports and white papers issued recently, though the angles and conclusions of the various studies vary quite considerably. Read The Full Article »

The US Mobile Wallet – Can’t Wait to Install It?

By: Andy Mitchell, 4G Trends Editor

In the context of mobile payments, the rollout of Google Wallet might easily be viewed as being as critical to the industry as Google itself has been to the Internet search engine. But not unlike the Internet search engine, there’s not just one name in the game and with a competitive marketplace emerging even before widespread user adoption, it will be an interesting if not exciting game to watch.
Isis, a joint venture between AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile, is Google Wallet’s only currently visible mobile wallet competitor. By comparison, while it has been around since 2010, Isis has, until recently, maintained a relatively low profile compared to Google which announced its plans almost a year afterward.

“Mobile commerce is more than a new way to pay; it’s about extending the relationships consumers enjoy with their banks and merchants into a powerful and convenient new form factor,” explained Michael Abbott, CEO, in an Isis press release. In terms of extending the relationships Abbott references, for a contender hoping to achieve any sort of success in mobile payment deployments there are three critical objectives — or obstacles, depending on how you see it. They include:

  • Putting the technology into the hands of consumers
  • Ensuring acceptance of the technology by the financial industry
  • Acceptance by merchants and points of purchase

How LTE Changes Mobility

By: Peter Rysavy, InformationWeek

Long Term Evolution is global, it’s fast, and it’s available now on 57 networks in 34 countries. Too bad it faces significant obstacles.

The mobile broadband industry is becoming a victim of its own success as an unprecedented number of bytes flow across the airwaves. Yet efforts to free up additional spectrum are going nowhere fast, putting carriers between an extremely slow-moving government and enterprise and consumer customers who want their apps and data—now.

SAN FRANCISCO – February 27, 2012 – 4G World 2012 announced today a ‘call for papers’ for its fourth annual conference and expo. This year’s event will be held October 29 through November 1 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The event website is www.4GWorld.com.

“4G World has adopted an open definition of 4G Mobile Broadband,” said Berge Ayvazian, 4G World Conference Chair and co-founder. “To support such an open definition it becomes absolutely critical that we include experience, expertise and opinion from each key area of the 4G ecosystem in our conference program.”  4G World’s call for papers is key to engaging the industry’s innovators and leaders in provocative business and technology discussions.

The 4G World 2012 agenda will focus on the most challenging issues and obstacles facing mobile operators as they try to manage the cost of unbridled traffic growth and exploit opportunities to capture sufficient revenues and generate a return on their 4G infrastructure investments, such as:

  • How can regulators, operators, technologists and other stakeholders agree on a plan for global spectrum resourcing to keep pace with the endless appetite for mobile broadband and provide universal coverage of True 4G – IMT Advanced – fully mobile, all IP @ 100 Mbps?

4G World 2012 seeks interesting, nonpartisan and product agnostic content from individuals or organizations that address these focuses and the industry’s ‘hot button’ topics.  Such current topics include 4G Network Evolution, M2M Vertical Applications, Mobile Cloud, Customer Experience Optimization, Voice and Value Added Services for 4G Networks, New Age RAN, Small Cells and Backhaul Solutions.

4G World conference sessions are intended to educate attendees on current 4G wireless and mobile broadband innovations, challenges and trends only, and as such product related submissions will not be accepted.  Interested parties are invited to visit www.4GWorld.com for additional details and proposal submission.  The deadline for submissions is April 6, 2012.

Birds of a Feather: Searching for a True Measure of 4G

Posted: October 19, 2011 at 8:47 AM

Birds of a Feather: Searching for a True Measure of 4G
Wednesday 2:00 PM in the Yankee Group Booth on the Expo Floor

How do you measure 4G? Operators and analysts have taken to using metrics from the wireline broadband world and from mobile voice to define one network’s performance over another, but do those metrics really mean anything? Does it matter what peak bandwidth or even average bandwidth scores are if a network speeds fluctuate wildly at any given moment. Does coverage or pops data matter, if a network can drop a data session multiple times within the densest market?

In this birds of a feather session, we want to elicit your opinions over what should constitute the future measures for 4G. This will be an open discussion where we’ll try to reach some kind of consensus over what measurements matter and why they should. Join Connected Planet editors Rich Karpinski, Kevin Fitchard and some soon-to-be-announced “guests” for a free-wheeling discussion.

From Billions of People to Billions of Things: Future Connected World

4G Americas and Yankee Group offer workshop at 4G World

BELLEVUE, Wash. – “A world of connectivity resides in the not too distant future, taking us from 5.5 billion connections to well over 20 billion connections by 2020, and the wireless technology that will successfully enable connected devices across a wide range of vertical and horizontal industries will be HSPA and LTE,” stated Vicki Livingston, Head of Communications and Analyst Relations for 4G Americas.
4G Americas and Yankee Group will present an educational workshop, 4G Future ‘Connected Device’ World, on Tuesday, October 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 4G World that is free and open to all attendees.
Earlier this month, 4G Americas released a white paper titled, Mobile Broadband Connected Future: From Billions of People to Billions of Things, commissioned from Yankee Group. Key findings of the report will be presented by Ken Rehbehn, Principal Analyst at Yankee Group, and an interactive panel of experts representing members of the 3GPP mobile broadband connected device ecosystem will offer discussion with the audience. James Seymour, Ph.D., Senior Director, Bell Labs Fellow, Wireless CTO Organization, Alcatel-Lucent; Loic Bonvarlet, Software Application Engineering Manager, Cinterion; Reiner Klement, Vice President Product Management, Qualcomm; and John Keough, Analyst, Yankee Group, will serve on the panel.
“Our future depends on connectivity,” stated Rehbehn. “By embedding cellular connectivity from the 3GPP technologies into connected devices, OEMs realize this vision and deliver solutions that delight consumers through proven high-performance radio technologies embraced by the vast majority of mobile operators around the world.”
The Yankee Group report concludes that connected device deployments enjoy clear benefits from the use of 3GPP (GSM-LTE) technologies from the individual device level through to the network infrastructure. OEMs moving to embed their devices will need to choose a scalable, cost-effective and high-bandwidth network technology and the 3GPP family of technologies provides a scalable option for connectivity. In addition, 3GPP modules are cost-effective and the 3GPP family of technologies offers the most flexible range of high- and low-bandwidth network options.
Attendees at 4G World are invited to attend this featured session.  The Yankee Group white paper, Mobile Broadband Connected Future: From Billions of People to Billions of Things (October 2011), is available for free download on the 4G Americas website: www.4gamericas.org.

Consumerization of the enterprise, combined with the explosion of smartphone and tablet use and the demand for mobility, has tasked enterprise IT departments with making business applications and content available to users and unique devices around the globe. Enterprises are looking at mobile cloud as a way to embrace consumer technologies while maintaining control over technology decisions–without creating new security, governance or performance issues.

“Mobile Cloud Means Business” is designed specifically for enterprise IT, cloud vendors and services providers. During the summit, Yankee Group analysts and other industry thought leaders will present interactive sessions on a range of topics, including:

  • Business cases for applying cloud-based tools, applications and mobility solutions to help IT embrace the consumerization wave, democratize IT and usher in a new era of worker productivity.
  • Strategies for service providers to partner effectively and deliver differentiated solutions to support the mobile cloud.
  • Key mobile cloud vendors and technologies.
  • Strategies for mobile cloud integration.

“Consumerization and cloud computing are giving workers an unprecedented ability to provision their own technology and mobility solutions for work,” said George Hamilton, Yankee Group principal analyst and a featured presenter. “Enterprise IT must embrace the change and command the power of mobile cloud or risk becoming obsolete.”
