Unlimited mobile data growth together with limited available licensed spectrum is a very likely mobile operator scenario. With the long term success for mobile broadband and MNO business health in the balance, SDOs, radio equipment suppliers, industry consortiums, and industry associations are all mobilizing to drive standards and solutions to help avoid the carnage. A mixed cell licensed spectrum radio environment, or HetNet, including macro, pico, and femtocell radios can help and is gaining momentum. Operator interest in unlicensed Wi-Fi spectrum is also being reinvigorated; not only for 3G Offload, but for combined cellular / Wi-Fi 4G services in the future. The challenge is making all of these services ‘carrier grade’ and seamless for the subscriber, and economically deployable. In this session we’ll hear from Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas, Prof. Simon Saunders, chair of the Femto Forum, and Edgar Figueroa, Chief Executive Officer of the Wi-Fi Alliance on what is taking shape in small cell, femtocell, and WiFi respectively. Dave Williams, CTO at Stoke, will moderate and inject some key network integration considerations for these initiatives.
